At the beginning of his career, Dr. Stoffels worked for 4 years as a physician/researcher in Africa where he focused on HIV/AIDS and infectious diseases.

In 1991, he became the head of development for infectious diseases at Janssen Research Foundation in Beerse, Belgium.

In 1993–1997 he held the post of Director of Clinical Research and Development for Infectious Diseases and Dermatology.

In 1997 together with Rudi Pauwels he co-founded the biotech companies Tibotec and Virco.

When Johnson & Johnson acquired Tibotec-Virco in April 2002, he became Company Group Chairman of the Global Virology Franchise at Johnson & Johnson and Chairman of Tibotec.

Currently Dr. Stoffels is Chairman of the pharmaceutical group at Johnson&Johnson.
